Yes I agree, this sounds strange. What is the use case??
If your users is on a unmanaged Android device and have Intune app protection policy on it, then the end user also need to install Intune Company Portal to get the Android device registered to Azure Active Directory. Then the end user has Company Portal installed and can start Managed Google Play to see what apps the company has set as available. That can be all apps that the Company has a App protection policy on, a iFrame app like a LOB app or a iFrame Weblink.
In this blog post I will show how to assign the apps from Intune and how the end user experience is from Company Portal and Managed Google Play.
I will not show how to set up Managed Google play or setup App protection policy / so that is a prerequisite.
First get the App in Managed Google Play
Start the Intune management portal https://devicemanagement.microsoft.com
- Click Client Apps
- Click Apps
- Click Add
- Select Managed Google Play
- Click Open
- Search for your app – in my case Adobe
- Click on the app – in my case Adobe Acrobat Reader
- Click Approve
- Click Approve
If your are satisfied with the default setting then:
- Click Done
Now the Adobe Acrobat Reader App will be in your Intune after a sync with the Managed Goole Play
Second Assign the Managed Google Play store app
- Click Client apps
- Click Apps
- Click on the Adobe Acrobat Reader app from Managed Google Play
- Click Assignments
- Click Add group
- Select Available with or without enrollment
- Select Yes under All users if that is your target group or select a user group
Note: If you already has a available assignment for enrolled devices you have to delete that before your create this one!
Now the end user has the app as available in Managed Google Play on managed and unmanaged devices
Now to the end user experience
When the end user is start Company Portal on there unmanaged Android Device under Apps the end user has a link to Managed Google Play
- Click Open Play
Then the end user is redirected to Managed Google Play – you can see the that your are in Managed Google play with your managed work account
- Select the app you what to install on your device
- Click Install
After the installation is finished
- Click Open
Now you can start using the app
Happy deployment
Hi,
Thanks a lot for this post! But I have a question.. I tried to deploy an app on Android device unmanaged, using this type of distribution (managed Google play app), but also after some hour in the company portal the app doesn’t appear.
Instead, if before I try to deploy an app type Android Store (so not managed) appear immediately and I can install this app on device.
After install this app, in company portal appear the shortcut with Google play managed with the apps that I can install without enrollment.
It is correct this behavior?
Thanks
Can’t thank you enough for this site, very thorough explanations and steps. Cheers!
